Highly touted Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes made his major league debut Saturday against the Chicago Cubs, pitching four innings while striking out seven and allowing six hits and three earned runs. Skenes departed the game at the top of the fifth inning with a five-run lead.

Skenes, who also walked a pair and hit a batter in the second, left two runners on base in the fifth. Replacement Kyle Nicolas retired the next two then walked three, throwing 12 straight balls and sending a pair of runners home at Skenes’s expense. Josh Fleming replaced Nicolas, and Chicago scored twice more to tie the score at 6 before a rain delay halted the contest. Pittsburgh went on to win, 10-9, after a delay of more than two hours.
